Second Street Under (Re)Construction
Last week, the City of La Porte City served notice that it is proceeding with the much needed reconstruction of Second Street. The project includes a full removal of the exisiting roadway between Locust and Sycamore streets, excluding intersections.
Horsfield Construction of Epworth, Iowa, currently has workers, equipment, and construction materials on-site and area residents will encounter some noise and reduced access associated with the construction activities. Construction will continue during normal working hours and be performed in strict accordance with the project specifications and City of La Porte City requirements.
Horsfield Construction will be responsible for excavating the existing pavement, placing a new crushed stone base and re-constructing a 24-foot wide concrete street with curb and gutter. Curb ramps and driveways will be patched to match the new road surface. No sidewalks will be placed along 2nd Street at this time. During the period of construction, Horsfield will place signage and other traffic barriers while working to ensure vehicle access, when possible, for affected residents.
Construction began in earnest on Wednesday August 22, 2013 with full, two-way access planned to be restored in 4-5 weeks, depending on weather. For the majority of the project, Lauren Wallace, of MSA Professional Services, will be on-site and available to answer questions regarding the project’s schedule, conflicts and access. Questions or concerns regarding the project can be directed to Wallace at: MSA Professional Services, Inc., Dubuque, Iowa, (563) 584-2891.
The City of La Porte City reminds area residents to please use caution in the construction zone for the workers, equipment, open excavations and detoured traffic associated with the project.
