Hawkins’ Happenings – May 8, 2013

By Jolene Kronschnabel

Knit a kite coaster at the library on Wednesday, May 8, at 6 PM.  Join Ruth Anne Schneck as she teaches how to master the basics of knitting with this small project. Bring #5 knitting needles,  #4 yarn, and a friend.

The library loves readers and May is Get Caught Reading Month. So, if you get caught reading at the library this month we will have a reward for you.

At Story Time on Thursday, May 9, at 10:30 AM preschoolers will read and sing about mothers, and make something special to give to their moms for Mother’s Day on Sunday, May 12.

Join us at the library for Mother’s Day Card Making on Friday, May 10, from 3 to 5 PM.  We will have the supplies to construct and decorate cards, you bring the creativity, and then you take home a unique card for your mother.

On Thursday, May 16, Preschool Story Time will include a field trip to the La Porte City FFA Historical & Ag Museum Fire Station & Jailhouse.  Children will read about behavior and experience what it is like to be behind bars in the jail cell.

Thank you to local businesses and community members for your generous support of Hawkins Memorial Library for our A Night of Magic library benefit. The funds received will be used to support educational and enrichment programs, as well as the future growth of your La Porte City Pubic Library.

National Children’s Book Week is May 13-19. At Hawkins Memorial Library we have more than 2,700 easy reading books, over 3,700 juvenile books, and 800+ books for young adults on our shelves. Also available for children are DVD’s, games, puzzles, audio books, ebooks, and special programs.

May is Older Americans Month. There are many wonderful items at the library for mature readers to enjoy, including large print books, audio books, and magazines.
