Hawkins Handcrafters is on Thursday, July 24, from 1-3 PM. Grab a friend and your handwork and join this group for a couple of hours of relaxing work.
Crafts are from 1 to 5 PM, Friday, July 25, for the Summer Reading Program. Activities include colorful butterflies, glow in the dark rice, and rainbow streamers. Bring the kids in for some creative art fun.
Local Author Cindy Gross is joining us at Hawkins Memorial Library on Monday, July 28, from 9 to 11 AM for a signing of her inspirational book Alabaster. Her book is available for purchase for $10.00 during Cindy’s visit and makes a perfect gift.
An A to Z Gardening Recipe for the Earth is the topic on Tuesday, July 29, at 6 PM with the WASTE TRAC Education Team. Learn about gardening by transforming banana peels, apple cores and more into compost. Kids will complete an alphabet stew scavenger hunt of items to compost, and mix compost with potting soil and plant seeds.
The Land Before Time, The Mysterious Island, is our 1:15 PM flick on Wednesday, July 30. When a swarm of “leaf-gobblers” devours all the green food in the Great Valley, the herds move on to find another valley of greens and in the process, Littlefoot and his friends wind up on an island in the middle of the Big Water. We always serve fresh popcorn with the movie.
The last Summer Reading craft day is Friday, August 1. From 1 to 5 PM make bean art, pretzel trees, and Popsicle tulips, plus a few crafts from previous weeks you might have missed.
The Curious Science Detectives programs return on Tuesday afternoons until school resumes. Explore kitchen chemistry on August 5, and make homemade ice cream, mix Mentos and diet cola, and create gak. This free and fun hands-on learning session runs from 1 to 2 PM for K-2nd grade and 2:30 to 3:30 PM for 3rd -5th. Programs are presented by the Black Hawk Co. Extension 2014 STEM Library Tour.
Alice In Wonderland shows on Wednesday, August 6, 1:15 PM. Alice stumbles into the world of Wonderland. Will she get home? Not if the Queen of Hearts has her way. This movie is the 1951 Disney version.
Keep reading and filling out those time logs for the Summer Reading Program. Earn prizes and drawing tickets each time you turn one in. Also earn tickets for completing the FIZZ, Boom, Read! Challenge; the Science Log; and activities from the Mad Scientist Sentinel. The last date to turn in these activity sheets is Friday, August 15.
The library has been very busy this summer with a schedule chock-full of great programs. Pictures of these events are on Facebook. See what you are missing, and “like” the Hawkins Memorial Library page so you won’t miss future programs.
