90 Veterans Make Waterloo Honor Flight

HONOR FLIGHT – The seventh Honor Flight originating from Waterloo over the past three years toured several national memorials in a rainy Washington, D.C. on June 18. Among the 90 veterans making the trip were La Porte City’s Don Heckroth and longtime La Porte City mail carrier, Paul Brown. Greeting the veterans upon arrtival in Baltimore was Major General Leslie Purser. One of the highlights of the day was the Changing of the Guard Ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery. Meanwhile, progress continues in the repair of stonework on the Washington Monument, which has been closed to the public since a 2011 eartquake opened large cracks on the monument’s exterior.
